چکیده

Comparison of available correlations and predictive models used to predict the minimum heat release rate (HRR) necessary to cause flashover show consistent trends for a range of empirical data. Nonetheless, available experimental data for HRR at flashover in compartments of similar geometry and venting show substantial scatter. Both the experimental data and theoretical predictions based on computer modeling indicate that a significant portion of the variability can be accounted for by the time period involved in the flashover. Although typically ignored in the available correlations, qualitatively a clear trend emerges—shorter exposure times increase the needed minimum HRR at flashover, due at least in part to the effects of heat transfer to the compartment surfaces. Additional measurement needs are suggested to facilitate better understanding of conditions leading to flashover. r 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fire Hazards of Some Modern Solid Fuels

Fire hazard during ship transportation of certain modern solid fuels is identified. A particular mechanism which may lead to catastrophic ship fire is discussed. A mathematical model predicting time to such fully developed fire (flashover time) I s proposed. An analytical solution is obtained for the developed model. An important part of this solution is a closed form analytical description of ...

On the Equations for Flashover Fire in Small Compartments

Equations for studying flashover fire were studied experimentally in this paper. Experiments were carried out in a chamber inside a full-scale burning test hall of the joint project between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Science and Technology of China. Three correlation equations on estimating the critical heat release rates for flashover were considered. The two-la...

The development of a new small-scale smoke toxicity test method and its comparison with real-scale fire tests.

A comprehensive methodology has been developed for obtaining and using smoke toxicity data for fire hazard analysis. This bench-scale method can simulate diverse fire conditions and identify extremely toxic smoke under both pre- and post-flashover conditions. However, incidence data show that most of the fire deaths in the U.S. occur outside the room of fire origin from smoke and toxic gases th...

Development of a Fire-Induced Flashover Probability Index (FIFPI) for Eskom Transmission Lines

The need for a fire-induced flashover probability index (FIFPI) for Eskom’s transmission lines (South Africa) became evident soon after the installation the Advanced Fire Information System (AFIS) in 2004. Thousands of wildfires were detected by satellites close to transmission lines, but only a small percentage (4%) of these fires caused a flashover. Historical flashover data was compared to s...

Predicting Rapid Fire Growth (Flashover) Using Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks

A flashover occurs when a fire spreads very rapidly through crevices due to intense heat. Flashovers present one of the most frightening and challenging fire phenomena to those who regularly encounter them: firefighters. Firefighters’ safety and lives often depend on their ability to predict flashovers before they occur. Typical pre-flashover fire characteristics include dark smoke, high heat, ...
